Uillliam Uallace (William Wallace in Gaelic) was a leader of Scottish forces against the English in the First War of Scottish Independence.

He was born in Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland, c.1270

William Wallace

Appointed Guardian of Scotland after his victory over an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, he served until his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk in July 1298.

King Edward I of England had him hanged, drawn, and quartered for high treason and crimes against English civilians on a day like today, August 23, but in 1305.

Since his death, William Wallace has become an iconic figure in Scotland and abroad.

I don’t know about you, but for me, William Wallace will always be this guy:

Mel Gibson as Willliam Wallace in Braveheart

It’s probably one of my favorite movies of all time.

And just so you know, a statue of William Wallace stands guard at the main gate of Edinburgh Castle.

DESTINATION

Edinburgh, Scotland

Nestled among volcanic hills on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh is a city where history and stunning architecture come together uniquely.

From the Greek-style monuments on Calton Hill to the extraordinary 16th-century tenements in the Old Town, the city’s diverse architectural styles tell the story of its rich past.

Edinburgh’s skyline is dominated by its iconic castle, perched high on Castle Rock.

With sixteen thousand buildings listed as architecturally or historically significant, the city center is no wonder it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While wandering through Edinburgh, you’ll find yourself navigating the narrow, winding lanes of the Old Town, known as "closes," where towering tenement blocks and church spires hint at the city’s once bloody past.

Edinburgh is a city of vistas, where nearly every street reveals a stunning view—whether it’s a glimpse of the Firth of Forth, the hills like Arthur’s Seat, or, on a clear day, even as far as Ben Lomond, some 50 miles away.

Edinburgh has played a crucial role in the great dramas of Scottish history, influencing political, religious, and social changes that have reached far beyond Scotland’s shores.

DESTINATION

The Castle of Edinburgh

Rising majestically atop Castle Rock, a volcanic plug covered in centuries of history, Edinburgh Castle is perhaps the city's most famous emblem.

From royal celebrations to great battles, this strong fortification has seen the most important events in the city.

It is a historic site where one may feel the weight of Edinburgh's rich and sometimes turbulent past, thanks to the castle's commanding views of the city below and the far-off hills.

Edinburgh Castle is a must-see for everyone wishing to connect with this fantastic city's heart, whether exploring its ancient walls, finding the Crown Jewels of Scotland, or enjoying the stunning views.
