Today, August 15th, but in 1620, The Mayflower set sail from Southampton, England.
Chartered by a group of English merchants called the London Adventurers, the Mayflower was prevented by rough seas and storms from reaching its original destination, the territory that had been granted in Virginia.
Instead, after a 66-day voyage, it first landed on November 21st on Cape Cod at what is now Provincetown, Massachusetts, and the day after Christmas, it deposited its 102 settlers on Plymouth.
It’s incredible what those ships had to endure to cross the Atlantic.
These days, a cruise ship will travel the same distance of more or less 3,000 Nautical Miles in about five to six days.
DESTINATION
Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA
There’s something eternally captivating about Cape Cod, where the rhythm of the ocean and the whispers of history entangle to create a destination unlike any other.
With its distinct curve embracing the Atlantic, this famed peninsula in Massachusetts offers a retreat into a world where time seems to slow down.
In the heart of Chatham, the charm of boutique shops and inviting eateries creates an atmosphere of refined leisure.
As you venture further along the Cape, the tranquil towns of Wellfleet and Truro provide a serene escape, where nature and simplicity take center stage.
Cape Cod’s coastline is a canvas of beauty, from the iconic cliffs of Nauset Light Beach in Eastham to the soft sands of Mayflower Beach in Dennis.
The Cape Cod National Seashore is a protected stretch of pure, untouched coastline that invites exploration and quiet reflection.
The lighthouses that stand sentinel along the shore, the endless horizons, and the gentle sea breezes all contribute to a sense of peace and wonder that is quintessentially Cape Cod.
For those who, like me, are drawn to the sea, Cape Cod is kind of a state of mind.
