In the early 1960s, Jay Carlisle, Hugh Kelley, and Don “Muk” McCallum, later known as the Bali Hai Boys, arrived in French Polynesia with little more than ambition and a dog-eared copy of Tales of the South Pacific.
They bought a rundown hotel on Moorea, named it Hotel Bali Hai (naturally), and somehow turned 400 scruffy acres into one of French Polynesia’s most iconic escapes.
They had no hospitality experience, but who needs credentials when you've got charm, a lawyer, a salesman, a finance guy, and a very lucky feature in Life Magazine?

Their quirky hotel grew into one of French Polynesia's most iconic resorts.
But their true stroke of genius came in 1967, when they faced a beachless, rocky shoreline on Raiatea.
Locals had long built simple huts over the water for fishing. Hugh Kelley saw an opportunity:
“Why not build overwater huts for guests instead?”
And just like that, the first overwater bungalows were born. A creative solution turned into a global symbol of barefoot luxury.

Today, more than 7,000 of these floating fantasies circle the globe, offering everything from rooftop terraces to glass-bottom floors and butlers with names like Jacques.

Yet everyone still carries the bold spirit of the Bali Hai Boys, who believed that paradise isn’t something you find; it’s something you build.
