Discover the Secret Behind One of Spain’s Greatest Legacies

A 420-Year Heritage Comes to Life

In partnership with

To all my colleagues in South California and specifically in Los Angeles, I hope you are ok. I’m sure everyone reading this has all of you in their thoughts. Keep safe.

It is in Madrid, 420 years ago, on January 16th, 1605, that Miguel de Cervantes's "El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha" (Book One of Don Quixote) is published for the very first time.

"Don Quixote de la Mancha" is one of the most important works in literary history for several reasons. Its impact spans literature, culture, philosophy, and even modern storytelling.

And you will ask, What the heck does it have to do with travel?

Well, I think the book’s message aligns beautifully with the ideal of travel, especially when seen as a metaphor for self-discovery, the pursuit of dreams, and the confrontation between imagination and reality.

Traveling is like being Don Quixote: you have to dream big, be open to the unexpected, and see the extraordinary in the ordinary. Cervantes shows us that a journey is valuable not because it is perfect but because it can move, inspire, and change us.

"In a site of La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind, there lived not long since one of those gentlemen that keep a lance in the lance-rack, an old buckler, a lean hack, and a greyhound for coursing."

Don Quixote de la Mancha's famous opening line introduces the reader to the eccentric protagonist and establishes the tone for the entire novel. It hints at Quijote's faded grandeur and his quest to revive chivalry while setting the adventure in an unnamed region of La Mancha.
